MARRKNULL is part of a new wave of Chinese labels from Beijing, founded by Wang Wei and Tim Shi in 2016. MARRKNULL (2021) said that “Marrknull has been trying to modernise the expression of Chinese culture in clothing... We deconstruct and reinterpret the contemporary culture that China has accumulated in the process of development. A kind of order is found in the chaotic collision of the county culture, thus forming the unique Marrknull style.”
“The blending of different eras and regional cultures to the final fusion is the iconic feature of contemporary Chinese culture.” (MARRKNULL, 2021)
Marrknull has been trying to modernise the expression of Chinese culture in clothing, but our Chinese elements are not limited to traditional culture. We deconstruct and reinterpret the contemporary culture that China has accumulated in the process of development. A kind of order is found in the chaotic collision of the county culture, thus forming the unique Marrknull style.
When you think of Chinese culture, the first thing that comes to mind is traditional Chinese clothing such as qipao and hanbok. We have to admit that Chinese traditional culture is an important part of Chinese culture. However, Chinese culture is rich in diversity and is not limited to traditional Chinese culture.
In contemporary Chinese popular culture, mainstream culture, popular culture and elite culture broadly constitute the basic pattern of cultural differentiation. If we put aside preconceived political or academic positions and look at the development of contemporary popular culture with a realistic mindset, we will find that the trend of media convergence and industrial integration has led to the blurring of the boundaries between elegance and vulgarity in Chinese literary production, and the merging of elegance and vulgarity has become a strong development trend. The merging of the elegant and the popular also means the merging of mainstream, popular and elite culture. This merging trend includes the return of popular culture to mainstream values and traditional culture, as well as the respect of mainstream and elite culture for the aesthetic taste of the public and the importance of experience in the production of cultural products.
Through an in-depth analysis and deconstruction of county culture, which is very common in China, MARRKNULL interprets contemporary Chinese culture, which is completely different from traditional Chinese culture and is more inclusive and diverse.
